FROM THE PRESIDENT
What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility – a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world …
Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States of America
As I sit down to compose this message, I am humbled by the words of our 44th President as he ascends to the highest office in our nation at a time when truly great leadership is required. He spoke bluntly of the dire shape of our country and of the world and called upon us all to honor those duties we have to ourselves and one another. I am not nearly as eloquent or inspirational as President Obama, but my task today is to inspire you to take the final step to become a fellow of the Travis County Women Lawyers’ Foundation.
The Travis County Women Lawyers’ Foundation was created by TCWLA in December 2002 as an independent 501(c)(3) organization. It was founded to raise funds to make grants to non-profit organizations in the Central Texas region to fund projects that provide legal information or assistance to women and children. In the past, grants have been awarded to the Austin Children’s Shelter, Family Eldercare, The Center for Child Protection and Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas. For a complete list of past grant recipients, please visit the TCWLA website and click on the Foundation button.
Grants range from $500.00 to $3,000.00 and go to fund a specific project. Grant funds are not used to simply fund an organization’s operating budget. The money to fund these grants comes in large part from funds paid for fellowships. There are three levels of fellows: The basic Fellow requires a $1,000.00 contribution. A Sustaining Fellow requires a $1,500.00 contribution and an Invited Fellow requires a $2,500.00 contribution. This contribution can be paid as a lump sum or over a ten year period. And because TCWLA established the Foundation as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, your contribution is 100% tax deductible in the year it is made. For less than $10.00 per month, you can become a Fellow.
I have attached the Fellow Response Form as page 2 of this message, so you can print the page, fill it out and send it in right now. Remember last month’s President’s message regarding the resolutions of ambitious women and don’t procrastinate! If you can’t quite swing even $100.00 per year for 10 years right now, you can make a one time contribution in any amount you can afford. Everything helps.
TCWLA will be sending out letters shortly seeking grant applications from area nonprofits. If you know of or work with an organization that has a project that provides legal information or assistance to women or children that can use some financial assistance, please encourage them to make a grant application. The grant application is available on the TCWLA website as well. Also, mark your calendar, if you have not already done so. The Grants and Awards luncheon is scheduled for May 14th at the Hilton Hotel on Fifth Street.
The economic times are tough. Last year the United Way restructured its funding, leaving many organizations short of funds. The Foundation can help sustain law related projects that provide assistance to our most vulnerable population. Let us heed our President’s call to usher in a new era of responsibility by making a contribution to the Foundation today!

2009 TCWLA’s TAKE YOUR DAUGHTERS TO WORK DAY
We need you to volunteer for the Travis County Woman Lawyers Association’s award winning program by serving as a mentor, even if it’s only for one day. TCWLA has scheduled its premier program, “Take Your Daughters to Work Day”, on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This year we are going to include not only fifth graders but sixth grade girls. After many years with Norman Elementary, we are switching schools to another East Austin Elementary School, Zavala Elementary. This change is occurring to give opportunities for another school to be exposed to our award winning program. This will be the 3rd year to have a mock trial where the State seeks a protective order on dating violence allegations.
If you wish to volunteer, please contact the Chair, Judge Orlinda Naranjo, at 854-4023 or email her at email@example.com. We always need help with drivers and lawyers to handle the case as a prosecutor or defense lawyer.
TCWLA’s Color of Justice Program
TCWLA is excited about the upcoming Color of Justice Program this year. It will be our fourth year to host this wonderful and enriching program for approximately 50 minority high school students from Austin ISD. The event introduces minority students to a diverse group of minority judges, lawyers, and law students whose stories illustrate the many career options available in the law and judiciary.
